Our Spring Monthly Meetings are set! The result of the poll was to keep our traditional meeting day and time, which is the 2nd Thursday of each month from 5-7pm. Thus, the Spring 2011 GSS meetings will be:

Join us at the GSS Coffee Hour!

Before all the chaos and stress of final exams, join us for a relaxing Saturday morning brunch and coffee break from 10am until noon in Trabant 206. This event is open to all graduate students, so be sure to spread the news to your friends and colleagues!

The location has been moved to room 206 in Trabant due to limted access to Townsend Hall on Saturday because of the UD football game. There is a parking garage located behind Trabant if parking is a concern, and there are gold parking lots located near the Little Bob and north of the railroad track on North College Ave.

There will be a FREE light breakfast, coffee, and hot chocolate! Feel free to bring your laptop if you want to get some work done...or simply bring yourself and enjoy the company. Good luck with your work and hope to see you all there!!

New GSS Committee Formed!

At the October GSS meeting, a new Ad Hoc Committee was formed to investigate the pros and cons of a possible mandatory student activity fee for graduate students at UD. Over the years, there has been much discussion about the issue of "the fee" and now, GSS members will be seriously looking into it.

The very first meeting of the Committee will take place Friday, November 5th at 5pm in Townsend Hall Commons. At this meeting, committee chair(s) will be elected and an action plan for the committee will begin to be determined. Please come to this meeting if you are interested in this topic and would like to be involved! It is open to all UD grad students.

GSS Special Session about Parking & Public Safety

The GSS will be holding a Special Session for Bill Fitzpatrick, Director of Support Services; Skip Homiak, Executive Director of Campus and Public Safety; and Chief Patrick Ogden, Director of Public Safety to address the concerns of graduate students about the new parking policy and public safety issues.

GSS Senator Retreat

This year, the GSS held our first Senator Retreat on August 30th for all new and returning Senators. We went over important information about the GSS, including the responsibilities of a Senator and the responsibilities of Committee Chairs, and we began to form our Committees for the 2010-2011 academic year. Teaching Conference Travel Fellowship

The Center for Educational Effectiveness and the Office of Graduate and Professional Education are pleased to announce a special Teaching Conference Travel Fellowship for Doctoral Candidates. This Travel Fellowship is designed to support University of Delaware doctoral candidates who pursue faculty careers to participate in the 2010 Lilly-East Conference focused on learning, teaching, and assessment in higher education. This regional teaching conference presents a unique professional development opportunity for future faculty to refine their teaching skills, support their growth as teacher-scholars in the discipline, deepen their understanding of faculty roles in different institutional contexts, and network with faculty across East Coast institutions. The conference will be held in Washington D.C. from June 2-5, 2010.

Proposals are due by Friday, April 9, 2010.

Academic Career Preparation Summer Institute

This one-week Summer Institute to be held July 19th through July 23rd, is designed to prepare doctoral students across disciplines for the academic career path. It is offered by the Center for Educational Effectiveness and the Bank of America Career Services Center in collaboration with the Office of Graduate & Professional Education.

Eligibility: Doctoral students who are one to two years away from completing their academic programs (have completed their coursework and passed their qualifying exams) and have begun to prepare for the academic job market. (Postdocs, who completed their graduate degree at UD and are interested in pursuing a faculty career, are also eligible)

Application materials will be available by March 12th, with an application deadline of April 12th.

Dissertation Boot Camps for Summer 2010

Three, two-week workshops will be offered by the Writing Center faculty in June, July, and August. These have been hugely popular and productive (including lunch and focused time for directed writing) and attended by graduate students across campus. Note: applications from students who have participated in prior boot camps will be considered. More details to follow in the near future.

Nominations for the 2010-2011 Executive Committee will open officially at our meeting on March 11th. However, it is not too early to start thinking about nominations! If you would like to nominate someone for next year's Executive Committee (or nominate yourself!), simply email GSS President Laura Miller (lauraatc@udel.edu) and provide their name and the position that you are nominating them for. There are four positions on the Executive Committee: President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, and Membership Officer.

If you are interested in running for a position, but aren't quite sure what is involved, please email Laura and she will get you in touch with the current person filling that position for more information!

Joining the Executive Committee is a fantastic way to interact with administration, fellow graduate students, and other individuals in the UD community and to get involved in service to the University!

Academic Career Preparation Session

We invite those of you who are getting ready to embark on your post-graduate career, the join us for a session focused on the preparation of your teaching statement. Teaching statements constitute one of the documents that may be required as part of an academic position application, particularly for teaching-focused positions. In this session you become familiar with the purpose and features of a teaching statement that persuasively communicates your approach to learning, teaching and assessment in your discipline. You will critique sample statements and start drafting your own.

To allow for interaction and individual feedback, the session is limited to 20 participants.

As you are all probably aware by now, UD has closed campus tomorrow (February 11th) which puts a slight damper on having our monthly meeting. Pending the availability of our two guest speakers (Ms. Marianne Green from the Career Services Center and Mr. Jeff Lang from GradShare), our meeting will be rescheduled for next Thursday, February 18th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. The New Senator Orientation will still be held prior to the meeting at 4:30pm. Senators who started in the Fall semester as well as students interested in serving on the GSS as a volunteer are asked to attend this orientation.

We will follow-up ASAP with a confirmed date and location for our monthly meeting.

This intensive three-day grant proposal workshop is geared for: 1) those who wish to strengthen their grant writing skills and 2) beginners who wish to acquire and master the techniques of preparing, writing and winning proposals from various funding agencies. The center of attention will be on how to effectively tell the story that leads to funding, be it for the researcher in the sciences and social sciences, educator and non-profit professional.

Louis Lorenzo Redding Diversity Award (nominations due THIS FRIDAY)

This award recognizes UD individuals or units whose efforts have promoted, enhanced and implemented diversity programs or activities that have resulted in a significant change in the campus climate and/or composition within the University community. Examples include innovative recruitment and retention efforts, expanded educational opportunities for undergraduate students, and programs that celebrate and recognize the contributions of underrepresented groups. The award consists of a plaque and a $1,000 gift to the Morris Library in honor of the recipient. The recipient may help select educational materials for the library, in consultation with library staff members. Nomination forms can be obtained by calling the Office of Equity and Inclusion: (302) 831-8735. The deadline for submission is this Friday, February 12, 2010.

Global Research, Internships, and Performances for Graduate Students (starting Summer 2010)

· Sponsored by the Office of Graduate and Professional Education in collaboration with Institute for Global Studies. See http://www.udel.edu/gradoffice/financial/intlaward.html for details.

· This competitive grant program will provide funding of up to $5,000 to advanced graduate students at the doctoral and master’s level campus wide to support research travel during the summer of 2010 through winter session 2011 that will significantly enhance scholarship opportunities and/or provide interesting and important venues for creative work and internship experiences. It is fully anticipated, that successful recipients will use these internal grants to bolster future opportunities to secure external funding for research travel, via the Fulbright program and other potential resources. In addition, recipients must be firmly committed to public engagement and outreach, as they will become central promoters of this summer program and the value of international study in the future. Note that research travel within the United States will be considered.

Grant Writing Workshops

The Office of Graduate & Professional Studies and Morris Library will provide a professional development workshop series for graduate students entitled “External Fellowships and Funding 101.” Workshop attendees will learn the “how-to’s” of locating funding sources; strategizing for the application process; and crafting successful proposals. The sessions will be hands-on and problem-based. Students should expect to end the workshop with a clear and tangible plan for completing a fellowship or grant application in the immediate future.

SPRING WORKSHOPS

Responsible Conduct in Research Training: February 2nd-3rd, 2010

This workshop, designed by the Research Office for grad students and postdoc Fellows, will provide information on a variety of topics relating to the proper conduct of research and an overview of University and federal compliance issues. There will also be sessions on effective preparation of job search documents, public speaking, the patent process, authorship issues, and researching funding opportunities.

Participants may register for the entire seminar or for individual modules. Each module will have a separate non-credit course number, and participation will be noted on a student's transcript. Students completing all four of the half-day modules will receive a certificate of completion. Lunch will be provided each day.
Please note that NIH- or NSF-funded students need to attend and should register for sessions 1a (Introduction to RCR) and 3a (Regulatory Issues in Research) unless they have already completed them.

Call for Questions re: Career Services for the February Meeting Guest Speaker

Marianne Green, the assistant director of UD's Career Services Center, will be at the February GSS meeting to discuss UD's Career Services resources, and to address specific graduate student career guidance needs. Please email any questions you have on the topic to George Szczepanski at gszcz@udel.edu. These questions will be forwarded to Ms. Green to help guide her talk toward graduate student concerns on the topic. A question and answer session will follow the talk.

SPRING WORKSHOPS

Responsible Conduct in Research Training: February 2nd-3rd, 2010

Participants may register for the entire seminar or for individual modules. Each module will have a separate non-credit course number, and participation will be noted on a student's transcript. Students completing all four of the half-day modules will receive a certificate of completion. Lunch will be provided each day.
Please note that NIH- or NSF-funded students need to attend and should register for sessions 1a (Introduction to RCR) and 3a (Regulatory Issues in Research) unless they have already completed them.

Spring GSS Meetings

The University's calendar made any sense of consistency with meetings dates tough this semester. Our spring meeting dates will be: February 11th, March 11th, April 8th, and May 8th from 5-7pm in 127 Memorial Hall. Please note the room change as well! If you are new this spring semester, welcome! We hope that whatever capacity you are serving the GSS is a rewarding experience.

As I am sure ALL of you know, the GSS wesbite is under construction. This has been a challenging project as the vision of the website is for it to be an all-inclusive, go-to place for graduate students to get information. We appreciate your continued patience with this project as it continues to move forward and for the Spring, we will be utilizing this Blog (along with Facebook) as a means to communicate with the graduate student community at large.
